You can never step into the same river; and since ancient times we have attributed singular powers to every spring, stream and bog – water in all its forms. Corrinne Harragin, an excellent storyteller, entwines five or six watery tales into a relatable modern idiom. She’s very funny (the modern context often providing the laughs) and from the outset engages the audience’s links to water by asking us to name our local stretch. Later, she invites us to contribute sound effects: audience participation at its simplest and most charming. Probably wisely, despite overt references, this is no polemic against the damage, past and present, done to our waterways; more positively it invites us to reassess their importance for our spiritual wellbeing.
