Three shows about masculinity

Three shows about masculinity at the Edinburgh Festival 2024…
The Show For Young Men | Assembly @ Dance Base | until 24 Aug (pictured)
There are so, so many shows at the Festival this year touching on topics concerned with masculinity (which, obviously, is why I decided to do a tip section on it), but here are three I was especially interested by. This one is a dance show that looks amazing, and which asks what it means to be a man today. Robbie (44) and Alfie (10) meet at a building site and try to make sense of it all. Great for families with older children, I reckon. Info and tickets here.
Dean Atta and Jordan Stephens: A New Masculinity | Edinburgh International Book Festival at EFI | 24 Aug
“The stories and infinite nuances of male bodies have often been kept secret, or silent, in the service of a type of masculinity now thankfully becoming increasingly outmoded. Jordan Stephens and Dean Atta open heartedly examine their own experiences and relationships to explore new ways of being a man, and to love, and be loved”. Head to edbookfest for this promising conversation with two high profile creatives. Info and tickets here.
Furiozo: Man Looking for Trouble | Underbelly Cowgate | until 25 Aug
This is a show that’s been on at the Fringe before – to great acclaim and success – so it’s possible you saw it last year. But I expect there’ll be plenty of you that missed it, and I would, obviously, recommend not missing it this time. It’s a comedy clowny thing featuring police chases, petty theft and drugs that offers a disturbing but also funny depiction of toxic masculinity. “You will love him. You will hate him. You will experience the presence of the beast”. Info and tickets here.
