Three biographical shows at Edinburgh Festival 2026…

Gaudi: God’s Architect | theSpace @ Surgeon’s Hall | 7-15 Aug
I suppose one could argue that these biographical shows are historical, given that their subjects are no longer with us, and I have already done a history section. But I have no qualms tipping these shows too, especially when they are so interesting. A new version of this play, about Catalonia’s visionary architect, returns to the Fringe after an acclaimed run in 2024. Find the edfringe listing here. 

The Wolf Of Poyais | Assembly Roxy | 5-30 Aug (pictured)
This one’s about Gregor MacGregor, a nineteenth century conman who persuaded hundreds of people to invest in, and emigrate to, a fictional Central American country. He’ll be brought to life by acclaimed actor, writer, comedian and Fringe veteran Thom Tuck, and will share the secrets of his success, as if travelling through time, with his modern audience. Josiah | theSpace @ Surgeon’s Hall + theSpace Triplex | 17-29 Aug
The true story of Josiah Henson, who was born into slavery in Maryland, but escaped after 41 years to Canada. It’s a harrowing history of brutality and persecution, but the focus is also on the resilience and determination that saw Henson becoming a leader, minister and teacher, and inspiring Harriet Beecher Stowe’s abolitionist work ‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin’.
