The setting for this play is a Parisian cafe in 1998 where English TV pundit Jimmy Hill, played with gusto by Graeme Dallas, and Scottish football commentator Archie Macpherson sit after a Scotland-Brazil World Cup game. They’re joined by former Scottish international David Narey, who gets his chance to pull up Hill for describing his goal against Brazil in 1982 as a ‘toe poke’. Their disagreement concerns how England has consistently marginalised Scottish footballing achievements. James O’Neill as Narey gives a charismatic and assured performance. Hill is played as an irritating blowhard, and while that’s amusing initially, it wears thin when repeated throughout. The pair resolve their differences halfway through the play, so much of the rest feels like filler.
