The Shroud Maker (Andy Jordan Productions)

A play charting the travails of Palestine is, sadly, as timely now as ever. ‘The Shroud Maker’ cleverly humanises the tragedy, personifying the country’s journey through the life of Hajja. After a brief introduction to the present day, older Hajja, we flashback to her childhood, and learn of her struggles. The ills of British colonialism are hinted at, as 1948 comes and goes; soon Hajja becomes an orphan, then a mother, then finds herself alone again. Her life is punctuated by loss, and the powerful story is compellingly written and performed, barring some prosaic dialogue and manic delivery in the opening minutes. By the climax, when we learn the awful truth behind the ringing phone, such minor quibbles are forgotten.

Pleasance Dome, until 25 Aug.
