The Magic Lady (Freddie Hayes)

Freddie Hayes transforms before our eyes into The Magic Lady, the first woman to be admitted to the Magic Circle. She’s also the recipient of an “orbular” power, a traveller of the astral plane, and a drinker of wine. Hayes’ character comedy is large, ostentatious and ridiculous: puppetry and non-specific accents abound. As a performer, she commands the energy in the room cleverly, wringing out pathos for her characters and employing the right amount of discomfort from her audience interaction. However, there’s a convoluted plot that looms large over the ending and creates a muddled overall piece. It feels like the show would benefit from being a series of skits without hampering Hayes’ tricks within an overarching narrative. More Penn and Teller, less David Copperfield.

Hoots at Potterrow, until 11 Aug.
