COVERING THE EDINBURGH FESTIVAL SINCE 1996
The Last Laugh (Evolution Productions)
Paul Hendy’s play imagines three of Britain’s finest comics – Tommy Cooper, Eric Morecambe, and Bob Monkhouse – in the same dressing room preparing for a show. The performances are uncanny and quickly suck the audience into this fiction based on fact comedy/drama. It’s insightful and well-researched, and there are lots of in-jokes for those who’ve enjoyed the three comedy legends over the years. The play highlights the performers’ love for comedy and examines the intricacies of the craft and what it means to them all to be funny. It was a hugely enjoyable seventy minutes of theatre, with everyone involved on top of their game. I hope it goes on to tour, as the play deserves to be seen by a wider audience.
