The Chaos That Has Been And Will No Doubt Return (Chalk Line Theatre)

Sam Edmunds’ new play is political and personal. It is a coming-of-age story about two best friends who navigate young adulthood in the midst of booze, bangers and brutality. The set, designed by Rob Miles, is simple, a movable brick wall; the setting is noughties Luton, designed by years of neglect and division. The three actors on stage bring their inner worlds and this outer world to life; the performances of Butler and Aguinaga are strong, and Ayofe is able to truly shine thanks to some powerful words written for him. Matteo Depares’ sound design is effective: music and silence are used poignantly. The play feels extremely relevant; it is also hopeful, which is what we all need right now.

Summerhall, until 26 Aug.
