Surrender (Sophie Swithinbank, Phoebe Ladenburg, HFH Productions, And Nancy Medina)

Phoebe Ladenburg dominates the minimalist stage with her portrayal of a complex, flawed and troubled mother who is visited in prison by her teenage daughter. Her acting is captivating, and the audience are with her for every word, beat and sigh. The story starts in medias res, then unfolds, and jumps around – through the sleep-deprived journey that led Mother to this tragic place and point. The play is a collaboration between Ladenburg (who directs herself) and writer Sophie Swithinbank, and it is thought-provoking: it invites the audience to reflect on their preconceived notions, judgments and morbid curiosity when it comes to distressing and heartbreaking stories such as this one. ‘Surrender’ does what a good play should do — ask difficult questions.

Summerhall, until 26 Aug.
