Spy Movie: The Play! (A Cabbage Presents)

Has anything been parodied as exhaustively as James Bond movies? While ‘Spy Movie: The Play!’ doesn’t add anything new to this bulging canon, it is at least a fun hour of silliness. The conceit is that a frustrated scriptwriter is staging her movie as a play, bidding for funding from a high-flying producer located in the front row. From there, the story of Jane Blonde delivers all the expected tropes – the silly names, the preposterous gadgets, and the puns. So many puns. The low-budget action set-pieces are a highlight, including one particularly successful bit involving a remote-controlled helicopter. If a joke doesn’t land, another arrives within seconds, and thus while the show is rarely original, it’s never less than entertaining.

Pleasance Courtyard, until 26 Aug.
