It’s New Year’s Eve 1979 in Palm Springs and Frank Sinatra is on stage. Ol’ Blue Eyes tells us what the 70s have been like since his 1973 return from retirement. It wasn’t his greatest decade, although as musical tastes change, Sinatra’s voice never falls out of fashion. Bert Tyler-Moore’s play sees Sinatra reflecting on his three loves: wife Barbara Marx, ex-wife Ava Gardner and his mother Dolly. Richard Shelton plays Sinatra with a charming swagger, but it’s in the songs that the show really sparkles. With live piano accompaniment and simple staging, Shelton effortlessly belts out Sinatra classics such as ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ and ‘My Way’. It’s so good you almost think Sinatra is in the room.
