Shitbag (Tiny Table Reads)

Writer and performer Hayley Edwards’ debut solo show is a darkly comic look at the shame that can be felt around physical and mental health. Edwards’ protagonist, ‘Shitbag’ (self-proclaimed “youngest and hottest” in the gastroenterology ward), confronts their mortality and the possibility of needing a stoma, before spiralling into manic hedonism. Their story unravels with candour and humour – a toilet-seat is creatively repurposed, asides keep the audience chuckling, and Edwards’ persona allows their wit to shine. However, Edwards’ pacing is sometimes hurried, some emotional layers are under-explored and elements of this piece can feel somewhat derivative. But, for all its brutal honesty, ‘Shitbag’ avoids self-pity, choosing instead to be empowering and life-affirming.
