Scene (Black girl/White girl and Pembroke Players)
By Lizzie Milton | Published on Monday 28 August 2017
‘Scene’ has a clear statement of intent: as Ayo (Saskia Ross) tells us, they are “not there to appease anyone”, and accordingly, the show is unashamedly didactic in nature, whilst maintaining a distinctive rawness. The aforementioned Ayo and Flo (Laura Cameron) are a queer, inter-racial couple trying to write a play about their life together. It’s a concept that’s been used before, but in the hands of capable writers Lola Olufemi and Martha Krish, the device is broadened out into something refreshingly new. The recursive nature of the script beautifully reflects the repetitive nature of trying to communicate your experiences to someone with a fundamentally different identity. This incredible production asks more questions than it answers, demanding its audiences hearts and minds in the process.
