Same Team (Traverse Theatre)

Robbie Gordon and Jack Nurse’s play, created with the women of Street Soccer Scotland, is a joyful, energetic hour in the company of an accomplished ensemble of powerful actors. While the cast encourages the audience to participate, soon, there’s no need to prompt as the punters are fully invested in the Scottish team’s Homeless World Cup journey in Milan. The staging is excellent, as the story effortlessly shifts from dressing room to pitch. The lighting is also used to great effect. It’s very much a team performance, but Hannah Jarrett-Scott’s Billy Bremner-esque powerhouse as The B and Chloe-Anne Tylor’s measured captain’s role as Jo are standouts. You don’t need to know anything about football to enjoy this Premier Division 90 minutes.

Traverse Theatre, until 25 Aug.
