Rory Marshall: Pathetic Little Characters (Country Mile Productions)

Some of Rory Marshall’s characters are clearly types of guy you could meet – ‘Nathan Barley’-like skewerings of certain species endemic to the pubs and clubs of East and South London. Others are deranged, dysfunctional people who simply could not exist, recalling ‘I Think You Should Leave’ in their total incapacity to behave normally, or ‘The Naked Gun’ in their delivery of utter nonsense with the straightest face. Marshall flicks from one to the next with subtle but clear distinctions, never resorting to silly voices or mannered physicality. There are recurring characters, but nothing approaching lore, and Marshall wisely doesn’t attempt to tie it all together in the last five minutes. The result is an hour that brims with infectious confidence.
