After The Rainfall

Fringe First winners Curious Directive return with a devised piece about the aftermath of empire, ‘After The Rainfall’. Artistic Director Jack Lowe answers the Quick Quiz questions…

TW: Tell us about your 2012 show in no more than 60 words.
JL: ‘After The Rainfall’ is devised theatre, ant colonies, British Empire, 1952, 1986, 2012, 2022, Suez Canal, Saharan desert, bi-plane, Cumbria, coal mining, village cricket pitch, tuba, brass band, village hall, Cairo, iPhone, Twitter, planes, trains, taxis, Trieste, Berlin, Paris, Rosetta Stone, Nuclear waste depository, multimedia and movement. Spanning 70 years, four stories interweave all of these ideas, times and spaces.

TW: Tell us about another show or performer you’re looking forward to seeing this year.
JL: Without a doubt it’s Daniel Kitson (at the Traverse and The Stand). A genius of storytelling and very funny.

TW: How will you be preparing for the Fringe this year?
JL: We’ve been working on the piece for quite some time over the past year with a myrmecologist (ant expert) and various exciting creatives. We’re previewing in Norwich at the end of July.

TW: What advice would you have for someone coming to the Fringe for the first time?
JL: Keep working on your show, it can keep changing throughout the Festival. Be interested in the other people’s shows and the people around you. It’s an incredible place for ideas to spread. And make sure you don’t lie in the middle of the Royal Mile screaming to sell your show, unless it’s absolutely necessary!

TW: If your show was an Olympic sport, what would it be and why?
JL: A decathlon. It’s hard work and multi-faceted with sprints, jumps and throws. But normally, when finished, there’s a huge sense of achievement.

Curious Directive’s ‘After The Rainfall’ was performed at Pleasance Dome at Fringe 2012.
