Ironically for a play whose characters are in a choir, ‘Overtone’ feels more like a vocal warm-up than a full-throated chorus, and a handful of discordant notes spoil an otherwise enjoyable performance. Both actors deliver terrifically grounded performances, and the script is interestingly structured. The narrative shifts back and forth between the beginning of their relationship as teenagers and their well-established marriage, decades later. The dialogue is crisp and sharply observed. But a crucial third character – the charismatic, abusive choir-leader who fundamentally impacted the protagonists – is a gaping void at the centre of the play. We are told about him, but never see or hear him. This robs the climax of impact, making the whole thing feel flat.
