COVERING THE EDINBURGH FESTIVAL SINCE 1996
Orpheus (Wright&Grainger)
Setting the friendly, relaxed atmosphere from the get-go, Alex Wright and Phil Grainger welcome the audience warmly into the room; they direct us to our seats with gentle humour, before segueing into the show proper. And what a show it is. A modern retelling of the legend of Orpheus, the story is batted back and forth between Wright’s virtuoso spoken word narrative, and soaring, rousing songs from Grainger. It’s a winning combination, and one that rightly earns a standing ovation. Words and music overflow with emotion: with love, with joy, with sorrow and with hope. Punctuated by cathartic moments of humour, and the odd sing-along chorus, it’s a flawless masterclass in taking an audience on an emotional journey.
Summerhall, until 7 Aug.
