Oh, Calm Down (Charlotte Anne-Tilley And Tom Bevan Creative Ltd)

Writer Charlotte Anne-Tilley is keen to showcase the breadth of ways in which Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) can manifest in this thoughtful and impeccably performed two-hander. Alternating between Claire (Anne-Tilley) and Lucy (Maddy Banks in an incredibly moving performance) as they experience the intensity of actively discovering their OCD in adulthood. What this achieves is not only an accurate depiction of OCD’s nebulous shapeshifting manner: there’s disbelief at it lying dormant, fears of misdiagnosis, and the compassion needed to combat it. A chance encounter between Claire and a stranger is an emotional gutpunch. So too is the sense of familial solidarity. A beautiful take on tackling such a difficult subject, whether this is new to you or painfully familiar.

Summerhall, until 25 Aug.
