My Lover Was A Salmon In The Climate Apocalypse (Bradán)
By Alan Cranston | Published on Monday 22 August 2022
There’s lovely trad/folk music in this gig-theatre piece, with great singing and playing. And there’s a good idea too: invoking the salmon to help us understand the threats to nature around us. This majestic, myth-surrounded fish is now in catastrophic decline caused entirely by humans. Unfortunately, the show’s main conceit, that we would understand ecological disaster better if we could feel it as a fish, is not credibly delivered. Alongside unconvincing acting, the presentation of ‘the facts’ is overdone: a rant is rarely the best way to persuade. Of course, it is not easy to find the right tone to win over the ignorant or indifferent but for me this show, apart from the music, was wide of the mark.
Pleasance Courtyard, until 29 Aug.
