Muse Chanteuse – Opera Cabaret (Lisa Byrnes and Chris Taylor)

By | Published on Saturday 27 August 2011

This is a classy cabaret act. With singing, some instrumental piano music, gentle dancing and little context, Lisa Byrnes floats around singing poetic songs accompanied by Chris Taylor’s slight, jazzy playing. They’re muses without artists, so what they give us is lacking in distinct form, instead drifting through original work, homages to nonsense literature, fairy tales and romantic songs in French and German. This isn’t a problem: while acts can fall apart without narrative backbones, here it works brilliantly because both are brilliant musicians. However good they’d be apart, they’re better together, playing off each other perfectly. If it lasted longer, it might have become repetitive, but instead it’s a memorable experience.
