Keep It Dark (Bas Rahman)

Bas Rahman doesn’t want to lead a double life. She’s determined to face her conservative parents’ reaction to her “Muslim-ish” lifestyle in this fresh and charming Fringe debut. Rahman’s stand up feels personal and her highly engaging delivery reflects this. She’ll take surveys of the room to see what terms people are more familiar with, and feed this into her work. Familiar topics are introduced with enough of a new take that they don’t feel rote. Occasionally Rahman’s confidence seems to falter even though the material could be pushed that bit further to land another laugh- there’s a musical gag that trails off quicker than anticipated. With some fine tuning, audiences will be begging for more secrets to be spilled.

Hoots @ The Apex, until 15 Aug.
