COVERING THE EDINBURGH FESTIVAL SINCE 1996
Karen Houge: DREAMGIRL
This is a clever show that gets its messages across in many fun ways, using a unique format that feels perhaps more like a workshop than a performance given the high amounts of audience participation: playing various games, building our own paradise and talking to fellow members. Telling a story that follows Syrian refugees’ journey across Europe, the show was informative and impactful and Karen Houge brings the charm, the seriousness, and the humour, handling the topic and themes with love, and in a completely unforced way. Each of the different segments of the performance are highly effective, but the show is a little lacking in cohesion and feels slightly disjointed at times. However, more importantly, it leaves you uplifted and informed.
Underbelly Cowgate, until 24 Aug.
