If you ask me what dance is, my definition is a merging of music, movement and emotion, together with skill and technique. More importantly, I look for meaningful expression.’If I Can’t Dance I’m not Coming’ is created by choreographer, Karl Jay-Lewin and composer, Matteo Fargion, and is rooted in Fritz Lang’s masterpiece ‘Metropolis’, transforming the silent film into a dance piece. It ambitiously explores suppression, struggle and rebellion through the physicality, energy and dynamics of eight performers. Although some transitions between fragments feel unclear, the performers’ collective energy creates a strong sense of tension and movement. Choreographic techniques such as mirroring, canon and unison are used effectively, offering the audience a fresh way to experience movement and collaboration.
