COVERING THE EDINBURGH FESTIVAL SINCE 1996
Hangman (Avant Theatre – Singapore)
‘Hangman’ is an intriguing production by a Singapore troupe, exploring the struggles of two men within a system that thrives on executions. The narrative explores the similarities between an executioner and a killer, highlighting that the main difference is the executioner’s legal authority, raising questions about justice and power. This setup prompts the audience to question contemporary issues of punishment, manipulation, justice, and power. Ragu Naidu, as the executioner, and Vertrivel C, as the killer, deliver compelling performances, portraying slyness and pragmatism, respectively. Skilful lighting and sound design effectively enhance the atmosphere, and the symbolic use of a rough, question mark-shaped rope on the floor is a clever choice in the set design, reinforcing the play’s themes.
C Aurora, run ended.
