FREAK OUT! (Coin Toss Collective)

Firstmost inventive and engaging theatre, this show uses many forms: word, song, video and movement; plus friendly audience participation. Often beautiful, it generates a sense of nostalgia for the seaside to underpin a story about the increasingly immediate and direct threats of climate change. A seaside town has to plan its response to coastal erosion. Even if there are choices, how should they be made? Determinedly undidactic but equally determined to hit home, the show starts in an unlikely place: a town hall meeting. What follows is often powerful, if sometimes weakened by unfocused narrative and under-written relationships. But there is no doubting the company’s creative energy and, overall, their well-judged questions and concerns hit home strongly.

Pleasance Dome, until 26 Aug.
