COVERING THE EDINBURGH FESTIVAL SINCE 1996
Forked (Jo Tan)
‘Forked’ tells a very specific story, but reveals universal truths and explores themes everyone can relate to: belonging and (cultural) identity. The main character, Jeanette Peh, is a Singaporean woman who is highly Westernised and who decides to follow her dreams and move to London to study drama. Wanting so desperately to fit in, both socially and performatively, she is confined by internalised stereotyping and ends up no longer knowing who she is. Although she’s on stage with but a few plastic foldable stools, Jo Tan is magnificent as she brings an array of distinct and quirky characters to life. The play explores post-colonial hangups in a subtle, light and entertaining way; ultimately, it is also thoughtful, moving and poignant.
Summerhall, run ended.
