Flight (Darkfield)

This is the first time I’ve had one of these immersive experiences, and I’m not as nervous as a few of my fellow travellers appear to be. We’re given a ticket with an allocated seat on a replica of an aeroplane and asked to put on headphones. After the supposedly unsettling flight safety video, we’re plunged into darkness with only the audio for company. Through the headphones, there’s murmuring, then aeroplane-in-flight noises, and finally, when I’m a little impatient for something to happen, there’s a lot of screaming. A bit of philosophical rattle about how you only know if you’ve survived a plane crash, not if you die in one. Then it’s all over. It all feels a bit underwhelming.

Pleasance Dome, until 26 Aug.
