Unresolved tension runs through this show; this may be intentional. An autobiographical solo show, MJ talks us through her relationship with alcohol. That she has a problem is clear to us from minute one, but the narrative cleverly shows us how she excuses and explains away her behaviour, shrugging off regular blackouts in denial: until she can’t. The show touches on the source of her alcoholism, a need for attention. I’d have liked the script to explore this in more detail. At the end, beside a self-deprecating joke about mining her drunken escapades for a solo show in the Fringe, how she addresses this need isn’t clear. But it’s an honest and entertaining show, often funny and always engaging.
