The Yellow Wallpaper (BEDS)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

In this partly modernised dramatisation of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s celebrated short story, a house surveyor and a new tenant find a diary from the late 1800s that tells the story of a trapped heroine with an apparently unhealthy obsession with the wallpaper. It was interesting to see the story unfold from the perspective of the central character as she descends into madness, but there’s a difficulty with the slightly jarring contrast between the expressive Victorian language and the modernity of the two narrators; they seem to clutter the re-enactment with their clipboards, making the performance seem at times forced and unnatural. The acting was unfortunately patchy too, whilst the brief attempt at physical theatre was half-hearted. An evocative tale told unconvincingly, the show fails to do justice to the delicate and poignant story.
