Pekka And Stranebone’s Comedy Showpiece (Pekka And Stranebone / PBH’s Free Fringe)
By Kyung Oh | Published on Tuesday 27 August 2013
Set up like a mock-variety show, the humour in this comedy show is predicated on simulating failure. The first act showcases a pig that does tricks, but Ned the pig (played by a grown man in a onesie), ignores the handler’s instructions. The rest of the show follows in a similar vein, and we watch a variety of mock-comedians hilariously fail to be funny: a bumbling host who can barely get a word out, or a boxer who comes on stage to make sexual gestures thinking he’s being impressive. Often the jokes connect, and these moments of deliberate non-humour become very amusing. But sometimes they’re just too outlandish, leaving the audience bewildered rather than laughing.
The Voodoo Rooms, until 24 Aug, 5.30pm.
