ED2014 4/5 Reviews ED2014 Theatre Reviews
Symphony by Ella Hickson, Nick Payne and Tom Wells (nabokov and Soho Theatre)
By Hannah Cutting | Published on Sunday 31 August 2014
This production has a winning combination: three individual stories about love, loss, dreams and aspirations are strung together with live music in this touching new work by the sublime Ella Hickson, Nick Payne and Tom Wells. Trademark naturalism and a fantastic script enable this production to effectively meditate upon contemporary living. Great performances solidify the show, with every performer demonstrating myriad different talents as they swap instruments and belt out harmonies. The three stories could possibly be better interwoven, and the production as a whole might be more powerful if further fleshed out, yet this is a captivating, dynamic show combining tender storytelling with the thumping heartbeat of a rock concert. Fantastic entertainment.
Assembly George Square Gardens, until 25 Aug.
