Our Jackie
By Keara Barnes | Published on Sunday 31 August 2014
The mysteriously famous seventies television star Jackie Valentine has died, and the opening scene of ‘Our Jackie’ finds his niece and her husband, sitting in a solicitors office, waiting to discuss the will. The obviously frustrated couple’s relationship tension is apparent, and made all the worse by their procrastinating lawyer. Other estranged family members slowly trickle in, individuals anxious to learn about their potential inheritance. The show has been staged by students of University College London, and their short amateur production is simple, amusing, and unaffected, yet it struggles to deliver enough of an impact. This is a young group with potential, but they need to do more if they are to compete in the Edinburgh Fringe environment.
Spotlites @ Merchants Hall, until 25 Aug.
