ED2014 3/5 Reviews ED2014 Theatre Reviews
Backstage (Spring Glory Chinese Opera)
By Raphael Highgate-Betts | Published on Sunday 31 August 2014
All the way from Hong Kong, Spring Glory are here to teach us what happens behind the scenes at the Chinese Opera. As the performers prepare for a show, we follow the movements of a young reporter as she learns all there is to know about the Chinese tradition. There are demonstrations of traditional make up, choreographed fights and music and we are given an insight into some of the mythology behind the characters and costumes, plus there’s a short history on the use of theatre as protest in China. The piece is overacted and the script basic, but the cast genuinely want you to learn, and if you’re interested in Chinese opera than this is a great show for you.
Spotlites @ The Merchants’ Hall, until 19 Aug.
