Strange Face – Adventures With A Lost Nick Drake Recording (Michael Burdett / Free Festival)
By Gemma Scott | Published on Sunday 31 August 2014
Michael Burdett found an old Nick Drake recording in a skip, then spent a year asking strangers around the UK if they wanted to listen to it. This show (and a recently published book) are the result of his adventures and the photographs he took as they listened. Burden does not come across as a natural storyteller – his delivery feels very rehearsed and faintly uncomfortable. Nevertheless, it’s a fascinating story, as he takes us through some of the people he met and their reactions – from Noel Fielding and Martin Freeman to hairdressers and farmers. Nick Drake fan or not, you will find this show really demonstrates the power of music, to move people and to connect them.
Laughing Horse @ Jekyll & Hyde, until 24 Aug.
