WitTank – Old School Secrets (Avalon Promotions Ltd)
By Jon Stapley | Published on Sunday 31 August 2014
A loose narrative provides an excuse for an hour of wonderfully vicious and tasteless jokes at the expense of boarding schools in sketch trio WitTank’s ‘Old School Secrets’. Puncturing the ridiculousness, pomposity and more unsavoury elements of these institutions, the group prove masters of story-led sketch comedy. Sketches happen within sketches; the lightning-fast flashbacks are especially good. As The School’s preposterous headmaster, Naz Osmanoglu mercilessly hoovers up the biggest laughs, though all three members do get to shine. It’s not perfect – there are some oddly dated cultural touchstones, and a subplot involving a whale is too bizarre for its own good. These are mere blips though, and by the time the grand musical finale comes around all is forgiven.
Pleasance Courtyard, until 24 Aug.
