Nathaniel Metcalfe (Glorious Management / PBH’s Free Fringe)
By Bruce Blacklaw | Published on Sunday 31 August 2014
On the last day of his Fringe run, Nathaniel Metcalfe is a little baggy about the eyes, in a fashion reminiscent of his vodka days. Smirnoff eyes, he calls it. Metcalfe was here last year – literally here, same room, same time; “look how far I’ve come”. Indeed, while the call back is part of the stand-up play-book, calling back to a gag from the previous year’s show is novel. Metcalfe’s self-deprecating style is a deliberately laboured delivery, leading up to a joke, talking the audience through it and then reflecting on ways in which it might have worked better, building layers all the while. Although the pay-off in laughs is not always forthcoming, it’s thoughtful, clever stuff.
Cabaret Voltaire, until 23 Aug.
