ED2014 3/5 Reviews ED2014 Comedy Reviews
Igor Meerson, Hou I Lernt Inglish (Mick Perrin Worldwide in association with Dylan Moran)
By Bruce Blacklaw | Published on Sunday 31 August 2014
Did you hear the one about Russian stand-up comic? Other than a couple of sanctions gags, Igor Meersun is perhaps understandably keen to skirt around the present political controversies surrounding his country, making the fair point that individuals do not necessarily embody the values of their country or their politicians. Or, has he more charmingly put it: “Russians are various”. Dealing with a language which contains phrases as bafflingly meaningless as ‘easy-peasy lemon squeezy’ when your earliest learning references are the works of Arnold Schwarzenegger can’t be easy. And sure enough, not all the gags work – a few duffers, in fact – but overall a warm and funny show in which the universal language of vodka pretty much pulls us through in the end.
Pleasance Courtyard, until 25 Aug.
