Simon Hoggart – House Of Fun – Twenty Glorious Years in Parliament (Lakin McCarthy Entertainment Ltd)
By Arjun Sajip | Published on Tuesday 20 August 2013
Esteemed journalist and broadcaster Simon Hoggart delivered drily, wryly witty anecdotes to an audience that almost wholly comprised sexagenarians. Nevertheless, anyone interested in post-World War Two politics would have found this an interesting and entertaining experience. The audience was lapping it up. Hoggart is an excellent, lucid (if a little quiet) orator, fully in command of his material. Unfortunately, those hankering after his political opinions – or indeed any of his opinions – left disappointed. Apart from professing support for Scottish independence, his entire talk constitutes anecdotes about various Prime Ministers, from Macmillan to Cameron. Neither does he answer audience questions straightforwardly. Still, an enlightening and highly amusing talk, awash with brilliant bits of anecdotal incident and the quiddities of high-profile members of British governments.
The Assembly Rooms, 9 Aug, 12.30pm.
