Gabriel Orozco (Fruitmarket Gallery)
By Sophie Nicoll | Published on Wednesday 21 August 2013
This exhibition of Orozco’s work, from the 1990s onwards, was designed as a thought experiment leading from one painting, ‘The Eye of GO’. The painting is simple black circles on a white canvas. Using circles as a focus was intended to remove the element of decision making from the work, instead applying a rule-based process. Circles appear in print, painting, collage and sculpture. The show is by nature repetitive, and this can make some pieces seem dull, when they might have been interesting in a different context. The work sometimes resembles scientific diagrams and has been accused of being too decorative. However, the wide range of media used keeps it fresh throughout, and the concept is an intriguing one to explore.
The Fruitmarket Gallery, until 18 Oct, 10.00am.
