The Year I Was Gifted (Atomic Force Productions)
By Frances Greenfield | Published on Tuesday 27 August 2013
The core narrative of this show is intelligent and perfect for the Fringe, depicting the coming of age of a young performer searching for her muse. Monica Bauer plays the fifteen-year-old-girl, coping with life at a performing arts boarding school. As a storyteller, her tone and emphasises are enough to keep the audience interested in a show that consists of just one woman in an empty room. However, her physicality at times leant towards the over-dramatic, enough to be seriously distracting from the plot. The message of the play, highlighting homophobia, class divides and artistic integrity, became lost in a sea of exaggerated emotion. Ultimately a production with admirable aims that’s just a little less than “gifted”.
Sweet Grassmarket, until 25 Aug, 2.50pm.
