The Winter’s Tale (Tread The Boards Theatre Company)
By Eilidh Johnstone | Published on Monday 19 August 2013
This production of ‘The Winter’s Tale’ begins in wartime Britain. Leontes’ madness is convincingly portrayed by John-Robert Partridge, and Jessica Manning as Paulina is a delight to watch, but so much of this part of the play was conducted at peak volume that it became wearing on the ears. In the second half, set in the Sixties (with songs performed in the style of Elvis), the production regained some of the spark that it had previously lacked, and the reunion scene in particular was compellingly performed. There was real chemistry between the cast, particularly Florizel and Perdita (Dan Gates and Jessica Noonan), who made a convincing and lovable couple. A smooth and accomplished piece of theatre.
