The Snow Cabinet (Cheltenham Ladies’ College)

By | Published on Saturday 31 August 2013

A frozen, speechless girl is taken in by a group of wayward women, told their tales and gradually warmed by their stories and songs of abandonment and belonging. The young troupe create a rich and enchanting environment, performing impressively as an ensemble and singing beautifully both in harmony and solo, some surpassing the skill of professionals in their ability and range. Excellent live music and some tentative uses of puppetry and silhouette further enriched this busy, lively production. Yet this felt more like an amalgamation of stories and songs, rather than a story itself, meaning the fate of Frost was somewhat lost; the play seeming to end without really concluding. Nonetheless, this was an impressive display, and an unmistakably accomplished youth theatre production.
