ED2013 3/5 Reviews ED2013 Theatre Reviews
The Shape Of Things (Impossible Dream Theatre Company)
By Kate Pasola | Published on Monday 26 August 2013
Vaguely entertaining but mostly irritating – almost everything about this play felt as contrived as its intensely dislikeable lead characters (art student Evelyn and spineless spaniel Adam). The disappointing script was realised in an unimaginative manner, and the habit the actors had of interrupting each other’s lines in striving for realism became infuriating. The ‘twist’ fluttered by with hardly any impact, due to the fact its trail of narrative breadcrumbs were more like un-ignorable boulders. I enjoyed the soundtrack, but in all it felt like the point of the play – and of the characters within it – had been missed by this troupe, and the opportunity to subvert stereotypes and tropes sailed within the first 20 minutes. But if you liked ‘500 Days of Summer’, give it a go.
theSpace on North Bridge, until 24 Aug, 1.45pm.
