The Medicine Showdown (American High School Theatre Festival)
By Natalia Equihua | Published on Wednesday 14 August 2013
In this play we are not only transported to a warm, small town in Georgia, but we are also its townsfolk (with fans in hand and all!). As we are entertained with tap-dancing, fortune-telling, Native American storytelling, and country songs, Dr. Eaggerton advertises remedies for toothache, coughs, and even evil spirits (or spasms). But the drama unravels when we witness Dr. Claudia Hill struggle with her credibility: Dr. Eaggerton’s show could spread the disease. The cast successfully recreates the mood of a vaudeville show; yet, at times the actors struggled with keeping up the high-spirits demanded by the script. Despite this, Sara Anne Owens’ performance as Dr. Hill is captivating. So if you enjoy good-humoured performances, light jokes, and an intriguing plot, this is the show for you.
Church Hill Theatre, until 9 Aug, times vary.
