The Mad Hatter Bum Party (Dan Sellick and Jack Sterne)

By | Published on Tuesday 20 August 2013

This is a very funny, eccentric play about a group of homeless people searching for a new member  to join their ranks. Each acts out the story of how they came to be living on the streets in order to introduce themselves to the new acquaintance. The stage design seems almost too minimal but frequently there is highly creative use of props that illustrates each story alongside its narration through song, poem or plain speech. The play subtly suggests that attracting an audience is not the group’s motivation but that instead performing helps them stay sane and make sense of the suffering life of the homeless. The cast use acrobatics, lively overlapping dialogue and a soundtrack of classic songs to make this engaging.
