The High-Schooler’s Guide To The Galaxy (American High School Theatre Festival)
By Imogen Calderwood | Published on Tuesday 20 August 2013
Four teenagers sit terrified in their beds, unable to sleep, awaiting the first day of high school. Cue the entrance of two television presenter guides, to walk them through the dos and don’ts of high school. The comical script does have elements that will appeal to everyone, but the target market is definitely teenagers – though I did notice one teacher having a riot in the front row. The production occasionally touches on sombre themes, such as the inevitability of bullying, but these are merely glossed over. This makes the experience feel slightly bizarre; simultaneously making you laugh and reminding you of how harrowing high school can be. A clever, light-hearted production from a cast of talented young actors.
Church Hill Theatre, until 10 Aug, 12.15pm.
