The Epicine Butcher And Other Stories For Consenting Adults (Jemma Kahn And Assembly)
By Jade Wilson | Published on Sunday 25 August 2013
Things got pretty colourful at Jemma Kahn’s ‘tacky little show’ in a little black box. Kahn held our attention with stories that were graphically illustrated on boards, gradually revealed as the performance progressed – this is the traditional Japanese art of Kamishibai, but with modern content. Our hostess and her assistant, Chalk Girl, could have jumped straight out of a graphic novel, they were that cool, and the stories were dirty, dark and sometimes brutally honest. This live format is much more fun than reading a comic or watching a cartoon, and the performance also allowed for compete diversity in tone. A visual feast but never a case of style over substance, this show is a kitsch masterpiece.
Assembly George Square, until 26 Aug, (not 12), 7.20pm.
