Speak Truth To Power (American High School Theatre Festival)
By Andrew Bell | Published on Monday 26 August 2013
Inspired by the true stories of human rights activists across the world, ‘Speak Truth To Power’ is worthy but dull. With a stronger cast the tales of abuse, torture and inspiration may have had emotional weight. Unfortunately, the school age ensemble can’t carry if off, turning the many voices to bland monotony. The script has no dramatic core either; the faceless “them” counter-narrating do not provide any sense of conflict of tension, just mundanity. The direction is well handled, however, and the costume design provides a nice, simple differentiation between characters with just the use of a scarf. The lives of those portrayed here are worthy of recognition, but this play is not the most enthralling way to do so.
Church Hill Theatre, until 21 Aug, 3.30pm.
