Six Characters In Search Of An Author (Cambridge University ADC)
By Elspeth Rudd | Published on Saturday 10 August 2013
This modern adaptation of Pirandello’s play attempts to toy with the nature of theatre, performance and reality, and questions where the boundaries between them lie. There are some nice moments that give us a glimpse into a show’s production and good performances from the cast. However, the potentially promising concept of the metatheatre ‘play about a play about a play’ quickly loses its appeal, with the narratives of the six characters being hard to follow. The relationship between them is not entirely clear and it’s a struggle to piece together each of their stories. This makes it hard to engage with their tragedies and creates confusion rather than shock at the play’s climax.
